Seoul's Representative Traditional Culture and Arts Space
This traditional culture and arts village contains five restored traditional Korean houses, a pavilion, a traditional garden, a performance arts stage, and the Seoul Millennium Time Capsule Plaza. Enjoy the atmosphere and experience the value of preserving traditions and culture.
Located in Pil-dong, at the foot of the north side of Namsan Mountain, the hanok village was a perfect recreation site and summering location during the Joseon Dynasty, due to the stream flowing in the valleys and the beautiful Cheonugak Pavilion located in the area. It was also called Cheonghak-dong after the blue cranes that would stroll around the village.
Cheonghak-dong was even called the home of gods, as the landscape was so beautiful that it was considered one of the five most beautiful places in Hanyang, along with Samcheong-dong, Inwang-dong, Ssanggye-dong, and Baegun-dong.
As part of the efforts to return the atmosphere of Namsangol to its original form, a traditional garden with a valley stream, a pavilion, and newly planted trees was constructed for the people of Seoul. On this 7,934 m² plot of land, visitors can see five restored hanok buildings that range from the houses of noblemen of Seoul to the houses of peasants. The houses have been decorated with carefully selected antique furniture that suit the size of the house, as well as the old owners status in society.
Seoul Namsan Traditional Theater
Seoul Namsan Traditional Theater was established in 2007 to promote traditional performing arts. It is the first specialized traditional music theater in Korea. The theater was built in a traditional architectural style to enhance the natural sounds of traditional Korean music. The theater offers a unique opportunity for both locals and international visitors to enjoy traditional music in an authentic atmosphere.
With a beautiful view and a cool stream flowing through the valley, Namsan was the perfect place to build pavilions and enjoy an elegant lifestyle. Rebuilt in a traditional style, the garden offers a great resting space for visitors of Namsangol. After being neglected for a long time while the rest of Seoul underwent rapid development, in an effort to rediscover the 'original' Namsan, the traditional park featuring a pavilion, a pond, etc. was constructed near the valley stream.
Seoul Millennium Time Capsule Plaza
To celebrate the 600th anniversary of Seoul becoming the capital of Korea, 600 time capsules were filled with the things most important to the citizens of Seoul and sealed off until 2394, when they would be opened to celebrate Seoul's 1,000-year anniversary as the capital.
