Free Admission with PassChangdeokgung Palace
Renown for its atypical beauty, Changdeokgung Palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 because it stands in complete harmony with its surrounding landscape.
A Royal Palace of the Joseon Dynasty
Changdeokgung Palace was built in 1405 during the reign of King Taejong as the second royal villa, following the construction of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the dynasty's legislative palace. Both palaces were destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. In 1610, Changdeokgung Palace was rebuilt during the reign of Prince Gwanghae, and for 270 years until Gyeongbukgung Palace was rebuilt, the palace was home to the Joseon dynasty as well as its government.
There are two tours available at Changdeokgung Palace. The first centers around Injeongjeon Hall, which served as the main throne hall of the palace, as well as the living quarters of the king and queen. The second tour is a visit of the Huwon Secret Garden, and of its ponds and gardens that blend in harmony with nature, including Buyongji Pond, Aeryeonji Pond, Gwannamji Pond, Ongnyucheon Stream, and more.
※ Please note: the Discover Seoul Pass does not include the Huwon Secret Garden tour or any night-time openings of the palace.
